  Electro-Harmonix recently reissued my all time favorite amp, the MIG 50. This is modelled on the prototype Mike sent me. I tossed it in the pack because it kicks and sounds excellent.

  I’ve had this amp for over 20 years, and it’s my most played. I’ve swapped pots, jacks, switches, tube sockets, and even added a solid state/tube rectifier switch. If my house were burning down, this is the amp I’d grab.

  A lesser-known Sovtek designed for bass, but secretly incredible for guitar. This underrated amp is clean, pedal-friendly, and full of headroom.

  Wood panelled version of the high gain Midget 50H, a JCM 800 style amp that improves the sound with its Soviet flavor.

  The most collectible and infamous Sovtek amp ever made. The first batch of MIG 50s Mike Matthews received had 30 watt transformers, not 50.  This amp has lower headroom and more natural compression.

  Very loud. Heavy as sin. Incredible gain structure and saturation. This amp is a wall of Sovtek fury.

  There’s another Sovtek MIG 50, but without a photo. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s a Model 001, but without a picture, I can’t confirm.

  The most slept on Sovtek in the whole lineup. Loud, clean, and surprisingly Dumblesque when paired with a Strat. Gets punishing volume and glassy headroom.

  My second favorite Sovtek amp delivers incredible drive tones, especially with a Jazzmaster bridge pickup, live or in the studio. I bought this in Lawrence, Kansas, and it’s one of my most used amps.

  The Admiral is a very rare version of a Sovtek Midget 50H made for the German market.
  

• MIG 80

  Technically, this amp doesn’t exist. It was found non-functioning in a warehouse in St. Petersburg with factory PCB errors. I had it modded and swapped the original Russian tubes for EL84s. It sounds like Tony Stark mashed a Vox AC30 and a Fender Bassman together.
